Respiratory System Flashcards
Functions respiratory function
-Exchange of gases between blood and atmosphere
-Homeostatic regulation of PH
-protection from inhaled pathogens and irritating substances
-vocalización
Respiratory system
Pharynx
Vocal cords
Nasal cavity
Tongue
Larynx
Esophagus
Trachea
Right lung
Right bronchus
Left Lung
Left bronchus
Diaphragm
inspiration (inhalation)
The diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract
Exhalation
Exhale
Intercostal muscle relax. The diaphragm relaxes upwards.
ALVEOLI
-moist, thin-walled pockets (sites of gas exchange)
A slightly oily surfactant and revers walls from collapsing
TWO TYPES OF CELLS-
-Simple squamous epithelia 95%(gas exchange)
-simple cuboidal epithelia 5%
(Surfactant secretion)
In the alveolus
Capillary
Alveolar membrane
Respiratory membrane
Surfactant fluid
( from the pulmonary artery, oxygen diffuses into red blood cells, carbon dioxide diffuses into alveolus, to the pulmonary vein)
Gas exchange
Air entering the lungs contains more oxygen and less carbon dioxide then the blood that flows in the pulmonary capillaries
Oxygen transport
Hemoglobin binds to oxygen that diffuses into the blood stream
Carbon dioxide transport
- carbon dioxide can dissolve in plasma, ab 70% forms bicarbonate ions
- some carbon dioxide can bind to hemoglobin for transport
External and cellular respiration
AIRWAYS
ALVEOLI OF LUNGS
(Exchange between atmosphere and lung) ( exchange- between lung and blood)
PULMONARY CIRCULATION
(Transport of gases in the blood)
SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION
(Exchange-Between blood and cells )
