Respiratory System Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the Respiratory System?

A

Brings oxygen from the atmosphere to lungs
Provides a method of gas exchange which services muscles
Moves CO2 out of body
Allows voice production

Q

Define the Larynx

A

(Voice Box)
Located at the start of the trachea
As air passes over, it allows you to speak

Q

Define Alveoli

A

Where oxygen is exchanged for CO2 from the blood stream (CO2 goes from a greater concentration to a lesser concentration through gas exchange)
- Walls are extremely thin and are surrounded by capillaries

Q

Define Inhalation

A

Breathing in, the diaphragm contracts and flattens as the lungs expand and fill with air, the rib cage also pushes outwards

Define exhalation

A

Breathing out, the diaphragm relaxes and ribs return to normal position as lungs push air out

Q

Define Gas exchange

A

During inhalation the alveoli are high in oxygen and low in CO2
During exhalation the alveoli are low in oxygen and high in Co2
Co2 is unloaded from blood into the alveoli to be breathed out during expiration
Oxygen moves from the air to the capillaries of the alveoli which attaches it self to the red blood cells
