Circulatory System Flashcards
List the 3 functions of the circulatory system
Moves O2 rich blood to muscles
Moves CO2 out of the body
Helps fight disease
What is the composition of blood?
55% fluid (plasma)
45% solid particles (red and white blood cells and platelets)
Function of red blood cells
Carry oxygen from the lungs to body cells
Carry CO2 from cells to lungs
Function of white blood cells
Provide protection from illness and infections
What are Platelets
Colourless disc-shaped fragments found in blood
Function of Platelets
Mend injuries by forming clots to stop excessive bleeding
Define Plasma
Yellow fluid containing red and white blood cells, nutrients and waste
What four things does Plasma contain
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Nutrients
Waste
Function of arteries
They have thick elastic walls to withstand the pressure of blood flowing through them and carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
-> EXCEPT Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood
Have a pulse
Function of Capillaries
Capillaries are the link between arteries and veins that allow oxygen, hormones and nutrients from blood to pass into cells.
They allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to be exchanged
Smallest blood cells with think walls
Function of Veins
Veins return deoxygenated blood to the heart -> EXCEPT Pulmonary vein carries oxygenated receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and carries it to the left atrium
Veins have valves at regular intervals to prevent back flow of blood
No pulse
Function of the Superior Vena Cava
Takes deoxygenated blood from upper body to the heart
Function of the Inferior Vena Cava
Takes oxygenated blood from lower body to heart
Function of the Tricuspid valve
Allows blood to travel in only one direction
Located between the Right Atrium and Right ventricle
Function of Ventricles
Muscular chambers that pumps blood out of the heart into the circulatory system
