Circulatory System - Response to exercise Flashcards
What is heart rate
The speed of the heartbeat measured by the number of poundings of the heart per unit time - beats per minute (bpm)
What is Stroke Volume (SV)
The amount of blood ejected by the left ventricle in one contraption
-> can refer to either side of the heart but most commonly the left
What is cardiac output
The volume of blood pumped per minute by each ventricle of the heart
What is heart rate measured in
Beats per minute (bpm)
What is stroke volume measured in
ML/beat
What is cardiac output measured in
Stroke volume x heart rate
What is the average heart rate
70-72 bpm (resting rate)
Increased heart rate means:
The heart rate increase to increase the supply of oxygen to the working muscles. If exercising at a constant (submaximal - comfortable) pace, the heart rate will level off and remain constant until a change occurs.
What is a steady state
When the demand for oxygen is met and the heart is able to pump enough blood and oxygen to the muscles to continue working at the same pace
What is the average Stoke Volume (SV)
60-80ml of blood per min
90-120ml of blood per min
What does Stroke Volume depend on?
The size of the left ventricle which is determined by genetics and training
What is the average cardiac output
4-6L per min (Resting)
20-30 max
What is the cardiac cycle?
Superior Vena Cava and Inferior Vena Cava -> Right Atrium -> Tricuspid Valve -> Right ventricle -> Lungs through the Pulmonary Artery-> (Now carrying deoxygenated blood) Pulmonary Vein -> Left Atrium -> Bicuspid Valve -> Left Ventricle-> Aortic valve -> Aorta
What is the average Cardiac Output
20-30L/min
