Respiratory System Flashcards
why do we need the respiratory system
oxygen for energy production, removes CO2, ATP production, talking, smelling, maintains acid-base balance in human body
What makes up the upper respiratory tract
Nose, Pharynx Larynx
what makes up the lower respiratory system
trachea, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm
Function of the nose/nasal cavity
- respiratory and olfactory
- filters large particles
- pre-warms and humidifies the air
Pharynx function
carries both food and air from the oral cavity down the digestive and respiratory tracts
plays a role in speach production
filters smaller particles
larynx (voice box)
connects the upper and lower respiratory tracts
houses the vocal cords
prevents aspiration pneumonia.
trachea function
major airway of the lower respiratory system
bronchial tree
the airways branching from teh trachea form this tree
these divide into secondary and tertiary bronchi, and then culminate intio alveoli
C shaped rings
they are rings that surround the trachea 2/3 of the tube. stacked horizontally, provide structural support and elasticity to the trachea
esophagus
descends vertically adjacent to posterior to the trachea
