Respiratory System Flashcards
Why do we need a respiratory system?
Our bodies are too large to rely on simple diffusion of gases from the atmosphere to the tissues.
Functions of the respiratory system x5 ?
Provides extensive surface area for gas exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2)
Helps regulate blood hydrogen ion (H+) concentration (pH)
Defence against inhaled microbes/particles
Forms speech sounds (Phonation)
Detection of olfactory stimuli
How can the respiratory system be organised?
by function or by structure
How is the respiratory system organised structurally?
The upper and lower respiratory systems
What makes up the upper respiratory system?
nose, nasal cavity, pharynx and associated structures
what makes the lower respiratory system?
larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs
