Respiratory System Flashcards

1
Q

Describe how the respiratory systems takes in air during inspiration?

A
  • internal intercostal muscles relax
  • external intercostal muscles contract
  • ribcage is pulled upwards and outwards
  • diaphragm contacts, pulling downwards
  • lung volume increases & air pressure inside decreases
  • air is pushed into the lungs because gases move from areas of high pressure to low pressure
