- internal intercostal muscles relax
- external intercostal muscles contract
- ribcage is pulled upwards and outwards
- diaphragm contacts, pulling downwards
- lung volume increases & air pressure inside decreases
- air is pushed into the lungs because gases move from areas of high pressure to low pressure
