Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how the respiratory systems takes in air during inspiration?
A
- internal intercostal muscles relax
- external intercostal muscles contract
- ribcage is pulled upwards and outwards
- diaphragm contacts, pulling downwards
- lung volume increases & air pressure inside decreases
- air is pushed into the lungs because gases move from areas of high pressure to low pressure
2
Q
Describe how the respiratory systems takes air out during the process of expiration?
A
—internal intercostal muscles contract
- external intercostal muscles relax
- ribcage is pulled downwards and inwards
- diaphragm relaxes moving back upwards
- lung volume decreases and air pressure inside increases
- air is pushed out of the lungs
3
Q
Identify the order of the pathway of air?
A
Nose/ mouth
Trachea
Bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
4
Q
Describe gaseous exchange?
A
The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the alveoli and blood stream
5
Q
Define breathing rate?
A
The number of inspirations and expirations taken each minute
6
Q
Define tidal volume?
A
The volume of air inspired and expired in one breath
7
Q
Define minute ventilation?
A
The volume of air inspired or expired in one minute
