Respiratory System Flashcards
Organs of the Respiratory System
Lies in the trunk of our body, upper chest. Consists of Lungs, bronchus, windpipe/trachea
Function of Respiratory System
The function of the lungs and windpipe is to provide air stream that is required for the articulation of speech sounds. By the action of the chest muscles, the walls of the lung contract, and air is pushed out from lungs through the windpipe.
Two processes involved during breathing
Inspiration - Inhaling of air - muscles expand; Expiration - Breathing out - muscles contract
English uses which air? Out of Inspiration or expiration
Expiratory air.
Example of a language that uses Inspiratory air
Arabic
Airstream mechanism
An airstream mechanism provides the energy required for the production of speech sounds
Pulmonic Airstream mechanism
Airstream mechanism which involves the air expelled out from the lungs is called Pulmonic Airstream Mechanism
Glottalic Airstream mechanism
Airstream mechanism which involves air stream set in motion by Glottis. In this case, closed glottis acts as the initiator
Velaric Airstream mechanism
Airstream mechanism in which back of the tongue sets in motion the air
Egressive Airstream
airstream that is pushed out
Ingressive Airstream
airstream that is withdrawn in
airstream used by English language
Pulmonic egressive airstream mechanism
