What is Phonetics?
Component of linguistics that deals with the articulation, transmission and reception of speech sounds.
Different branches of Phonetics
Articulatory Phonetics, Acoustic Phonetics, Auditory/Perceptual Phonetics
Articulatory Phonetics
- How sounds are produced or articulated
2. Also known as Physiology Phonetics, as it recognises the sounds produced by some of the organs of the body
Acoustic Phonetics
Deals with the transmission of sound. Sound travel through the air in the form of waves.
Auditory/Perceptual Phonetics
Deals with how speech sounds are perceived
First study of Phonetics
Done by Panini (Hindu Scholar) in 5th - 6th C BC. Studies the relationship between Vedanta text and vernacular language. His text “Ashtadhyayi” is a Sanskrit treatise on grammar. Inspired linguists Ferdinand de Saussure and Leonard Bloomfield
