respiratory regulation Flashcards
respiratory control
during exercise and recovery when the brain gets involved in regulating breathing rate
respiratory control centre (RCC)
receives info from the sensory nerves and sends direction through motor nerves to change the rate of respiratory muscle contractions
inspiratory centre
stimulates inspiratory muscles to contract at rest and during exercise
expiratory centre
inactive at rest but will stimulate additional muscles to contract during exercise
respiratory regulation at rest
IC stimulates the external intercostals to contract via the intercostal nerve and the diaphragm via the phrenic nerve
thermoreceptors
detects an increase in blood temperature
receptors for the IC
thermoreceptors, chemoreceptors, proprioceptors inform the IC which increases stimulation of inspiratory and additional muscles to contract with more force
receptors for the EC
baroreceptors inform the EC that the lungs have excessively stretched which causes the stimulation of additional muscles
