Respiratory Rate (Vital Signs) Flashcards
1
Q
Respiratory Rate:
A
- exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
- should be automatic, noiseless, effortless
- inhalation and exhalation
2
Q
What controls breathing?
A
the medulla (which is sensitive to the CO2 levels in blood)
3
Q
Normal RR in adults
A
12-20 cpm
4
Q
Tachypnea
A
rapid RR due to increased temperature or a disease
5
Q
Bradypnea
A
slow RR due to hypothermia, narcotics, or neurologic conditions
6
Q
Apnea
A
- absence of breathing
- if it lasts for 4-6 mins it can cause brain damage
7
Q
Hyperventilation
A
rapid or deep breathing, usually caused by anxiety or panic

9
Q
Cheyne-Stokes Respiration
A
- gradual increase then gradual decrease
- stops breathing then resumes
- seen before death
10
Q
Dyspnea
A
- labored breathing
- leads to hypoxia (O2 deficiency) and hypercapnea (high CO2 levels)
11
Q
Orthopnea
A
breathing affected by sitting or standing or lying down
12
Q
Stridor
A
- harsh high-pitched sound when there is laryngeal obstruction
- seen in children with croup
