Purpose of Bathing

Principles of Skin Care
- unbroken or healthy skin and mucus membrane serve as first defense
- resistance to injury of skin varies
- body cells which are healthy are resistant to injury
- adequate circulation is necessary
Before a bed bath, a nurse should:
- explain, even if patient is unconscious
- clear the area of any obstacles
- ensure the ward is warm
- have all the equipment ready
- deodorants, cosmetics, and perfume should be determined by patient

- soothes irritated skin ares
- treat areas with bed sores
- helps relax a restless person
- serves as exercise

- reduces muscle tension
- 104.6 Fahrenheit or 40.3 Celsius
Hot Water Tub Bath (types of therapeutic baths)
- relieves muscles soreness and muscle spasms
- 113 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, 45 to 46 degrees Celsius
- observe s/s of dizziness / fainting
Cool Water Tub Bath (types of therapeutic baths)
- relieves tension and lowers body temperature
- not recommended for infants
- tepid, not cold, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius
Hot Sitz Bath (types of therapeutic baths)
- decreases inflammation of perineal and anal area of patients who have undergone surgery
- lasts for 10 - 15 minutes
- 98 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, or 36.6 to 38.9 degrees Celsius
