Bed Making is
- a technique of preparing different types of beds
- making patients comfortable in their suitable position
Purposes of Bed Making
- promotes comfort
- provides a clean environment
- provides a smooth, wrinkle-free bed foundation which minimizes skin irritation
Fanfolding
done by grasping the upper edge of linens with both hands and folding the sheet 6-8 inches outwards
Mitered Corner
anchoring sheet on mattresses
Toe Pleat
loosening the top covers along the feet
Magic Corner
special kind of fold which serves as a guide that makes it easier to spread linens on the bed
Hospital Bed
selected for its impact on patient’s comfort, safety, medical condition, and ability to change
Bed Cradle
device designed to keep the top cover / sheet off the legs, feet and even the abdomen of client
Unoccupied Bed (Types of Bed)
- bed without patient
- closed, open, or post-operative bed
Occupied Bed (Types of Bed)
bed where patient is not able or not permitted to get out of bed
Closed Bed (Types of Bed)
- prepared in a hospital room before a new client is admitted
- top sheet blankets and bedspread are drawn up to the head of the mattress and under the pillow

- assigned to a patient
- top covers are folded back
Post-operative bed (Types of Bed)
- recovery or aesthetic bed
- prepared for patients who have undergone surgery or other circumstances
Bed Spread (Types of Linen)
- large piece of cloth
- used for warmth as a bed cover
Top Sheet (Types of Linen)
used to cover the patient
Cotton Draw Sheet (Types of Linen)
- piece of cloth used together with the rubber sheet to absorb moisture
- also a lifter for patients unable to move
Bottom Sheet (Types of Linen)
covers the bed mattress
Rubber Sheet (Types of Linen)
- protects the bottom sheet from patient’s secretions
- prevents bed sores
Pillow Case (Types of Linen)
covers the pillow
Folding the Linens
All linens except top sheet are Wrong Side Out
Flat Position (Types of Bed Position)
- mattress is completely in a flat position
- maintain spinal alignment for spinal injuries
Fowler’s Position (Types of Bed Position)
- 45 degrees, semi-sitting position
- knees may be flexed or horizontal
- for eating, reading, visiting, watching TV
- promotes lung expansion
Semi-Fowler’s Position (Types of Bed Position)
- 30 degrees angle
Tredelenburg’s Position (Types of Bed Position)
- head of bed is lower than foot of bed in a straight incline
- promotes venous circulation
- promotes postural drainage of brain / lung lobes
Reverse Trendelenburg’s Position (Types of Bed Position)
- opposite of trendelenburg’s
- promotes stomach emptying and prevents esophageal reflux
Lateral Position (Types of Bed Position)
- lying on side
- lower leg straight, and upper leg bent at knee
Prone Position (Types of Bed Positions)
lying on abdomen with head turned to side
Dorsal Recumbent (Types of Bed Position)
- legs are separate
- knees are bent and soles of feet flat on the bed
Knee Chest Position (Types of Bed Position)
patient rests on knees and chest
Dorsal Lithotomy (Types of Bed Position)
legs are more separate and knees are more bent than dorsal recumbent
