Respiratory Quotient Flashcards
What is the equation for respiratory quotient RQ?
volume of CO2 released / volume of oxygen consumed
What is the respiratory quotient for respiring glucose?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6H2O + 6CO2
6CO2 / 6O2 = 6 / 6 = 1 QR
What can RQ be used to find out?
-which respiratory substrate an organism is using e.g. bacteria is a culture medium with different
respiratory substrates
- if an organism is respiring aerobically or anaerobically (RQ of 1+)
What are humans RQ?
0.71 to 1
at rest, we are respiring both lipids and carbs
What are plants RQ?
can have a low RQ
use co2 from respiration in photosynthesis
What are lipids, proteins and carbs RQs?
lipids - 0.7
proteins - 0.9
carbs - 1.0
aerobically - 1+
kj / enerrgy is from high to low
