Anaerobic Respiration - Glycolysis Flashcards
1
Q
What happens during glycolysis in anaerobic respiration?
A
glycolysis takes place in cytoplasm - less efficient producer of ATP than aerobic resp.
NAD is needed for glycolysis and it is regenerated by reducing pyruvate
in mammals and bacteria - pyruvate converts to lactate
in yeast and plants - pyruvate reduces to ethanal to ethanol - decarboxylation
2
Q
Why is there less ATP in anaerobic respiration?
A
products lactate / ethanol not totally respired - still have chemical energy
no oxygen as the final electron receptor
no link reaction / krebs cycle / oxidative phosphorylation
