Q

What happens during oxidative phosphorylation?

A

electrons and protons are released from reduced enzymes

electrons pass along the electron transport chain in a series of redox reactions

this releases enegy which is used to create a proton gradient - protons diffuse down their electrochemical gradient through ATP synthase - chemiosmosis

provides energy for ADP + Pi -> ATP

oxygen is the final electron acceptor which combines with electrons and protons to form water
