Introduction to Respiration Flashcards
What are the two types of respiration?
anaerobic and aerobic
What is aerobic respiration?
needs oxygen
more efficient - gives more ATP
complete breakdown of glucose to form CO2 to make ATP
slow - in making atp
What is anaerobic respiration?
doesnt need oxygen
less efficient
incomplete breakdown of glucose
makes harmful waste products e.g. in animals and bacteria - lactic acid and in plants and yeast - ethanol
What is the process of aerobic respiration?
glycolysis - 2 molecule of ATP by glycolysis in the cytoplasm
links reaction - matrix of mitochondria
krebs cycle - in matrix of mitochondria
oxidative phosphorylation - intermembrane space of mitochondria
What is the process of anaerobic?
glycololysis
