What is canine tongue worm
Linguatla serrata
Describe the life cycle of linguatla serrata (canine tongue worm)
- Eggs on pasture/ water and is injested by intermediate host (ruminant)
- Eggs hatch in intestine and larvae migrate to organs
- Dog eats infected raw meat from the intermediate host
- Adult stages develop i dogs nasal passage- expels eggs via nasal discharge
What is oestrus ovis
Sheep/goat nasal bot fly
Describe the life cycle of oestrus ovis
- Fly deposits L1 into nasal passage of sheep/goat
- Larvae mature in the nose and sinuses to L3
- Are sneezed out and pupate on ground
What are the clinical signs of Oestrus ovis
Avoidance behavior
Excess nasal discharge
Labored breathing
Loss of appetite
Why is oestrus ovis important in agriculture
Economic importance in many countries not considered high e.g. high morbidity / low mortality
What is nasal myiasis
Infestation by a parasite which feeds on the membranes in nasal cavity/sinuses
What is dog nasal mite
Pneumonyssus caninum
Gapeworm in birds
Syngamus trachea
In what species is syngamus trachea economically important
Turkey
Chicken
Pheasant
Non-aquatic birds
Describe the life cycle of Syngamus trachea (birds)
- Ingestion of egg/ hatched L3/ paratenic host (earthworm)
- L1-L3 maturation occurs inside egg shelll
- L3 migrates from duodenum to liver to lungs
- Eggs formed in trachea
What are the clinical signs of syngasmus trachea
Gaping- open mouth wide and extends neck
Weight loss
