Respiratory Ident Flashcards
Posterior nasal apertures
Connects nasal cavity to pharynx
Nasal vestibule
Cavity located superior to the nostrils that filters out particles from inhaled air
Nasopharynx
Located posterior to the nasal cavity serves as an air passage
Pharynx
Connects nose mouth and esophagus
Uvula
Part of soft palate that covers the nasopharynx during swallowing
Pharyngeal tonsil
Traps and destroys pathogens entering the nasopharynx
Pharyngotympanic tubes
Drain middle ear cavities and equalizes ear pressure
Oropharynx
lies behind oral cavity and transports air and food/ water
Isthmus of the fauces
Connects oral cavity and Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
Extends to larynx and follows the esophagus
Larynx
Three functions:
Provides open passage for air and switches between good and air routes
Site of voice production
Nasal cavity
Inside and posterior to nose
Laryngeal prominence
Marks the fusion point of hyaline cartilage which forms thyroid cartilage
Cricoid cartilage
Located underneath thyroid cartilage
Arytenoid, cuneiform, and corniculate cartilage pairs
Make up lateral and posterior walls of larynx
Epiglottis
Covers laryngeal inlet and prevents food from entering
Vocal ligaments
Attach arytenoid cartilage to thyroid cartilage
Vocal folds
Vibrate as air moves upward to produce voice
Glottis
Includes vocal folds and the opening between them
Vestibular folds (false vocal cords)
Help to close glottis during swallowing
Trachea (windpipe)
Descends from larynx through neck into mediastinum where it divides
It warms cleans and saturates inhaled air
Submucosa
Produces sub mucus
