Lumphatic System Part 2 Flashcards
What are examples of phagocytes?
Macrophages and neutrophils
What are the main “warriors” of the immune system?
Lymphocytes
Where are lymphocytes produced?
Red bone marrow
Into which kind of cells do lymphocytes mature?
T or B cells
What cells fight off microorganism that enter the body?
Phagocytes and lymphocytes
How do B cells help the immune system work?
They produce plasma cells which secret antibodies into the blood stream.
What do antibodies do to contribute to the immune response?
They mark antigens for destruction by phagocytes
What do the macrophages do?
They destroy antigens and activate T cells
What do dendritic cells do?
They capture antigens and take them to lymph nodes
What is lymphoid tissue made up of?
Reticular connective tissue
What lives on the fibers of the reticular network?
Macrophages
True or false: lymphocytes exist only in the blood stream
False, they drift between circulatory vessels, lymphoid tissues, and lose connective tissue
