Cardio Identifications Flashcards
Pericardium
Double-walled sac called pericardium
Fibrous pericardium
Superficial tough dense layer of pericardium. It protects the heart, anchors it to its surroundings, and prevents it from overfilling with blood.
Serous pericardium
Thin slippery two layered part of the pericardium located deep to the fibrous pericardium.
Parietal layer
Superior layer of serous pericardium. Attach to the vessels entering and exiting the heart.
Visceral layer
Also known as epicardium, it is the internal layer of the serous pericardium
Pericardial cavity
Slit-like cavity between parietal and visceral layer containing serous fluid. Reduces friction during heart activity
Myocardium
Middle layer of heart wall comprised mainly of cardiac muscle. Responsible for contractions
Endocardium
Lines internal surface of hear chambers and vessels
Right ventricle
Forms majority of anterior surface
Coronary sulcus
Junction of atria and ventricles
Anterior and posterior interventricular sulcus
Junction of ventricles
Auricles
Increase atrial volume
Fossa ovalis
Shallow depression that marks location of foramen ovale in fetal heart
Superior vena cava
Returns blood from body regions superior to diaphragm(head neck arms etc)
Inferior vena cava
Returns blood from body areas below the diaphragm
