What is bronchophony? Kassmaul respirations?
Bronchophony - E sounds loud!
Kassmaul - hyperpnea
What is resonance? Hyperresonance?
Resonance - low-pitched sound
Hyperresonance - abnormally long low pitched sound
What is Pneumothorax? Pleurisy? Pleuritic? Apnea?
Pneumothorax - collapsed lung
Pleurisy - inflammation of the pleura
Pleuritic - sharp-knife like
Apnea - absence of spontaneous respiration
What is rhonchi? Friction rub?
Rhonchi - deep course sounds “snoring”
Friction rub - deep harsh grating sound
Which laboratory tests are used to assess for asthma?
PFTs
ABG
CXR
Electrolytes
What do you look for in a physical exam for pneumonia patients?
Dullness to percussion
Vowel sound changes
Sputum changes
What are some drugs that cause bronchospasms?
Pencillins, sulfonamides, serum, pain meds (NSAIDs), opiods, steroids
When you inspect the patient, what kind of things you look for?
Cyanosis, clubbing, Pallor, Nasal flaring
When you palpate, what do you do?
Slide hands medially to the 10th intercoastal bone
How do you assess for tactle fremitus?
lightly feel posterior chest to evaluate for intensity of vibration
When percussing, what are potential diseases related to hyperresonance? Dullness?
Hyperresonance: emphysema and pneumonthorax (presence of air causing collapse of lung)
Dullness: pneumonia, pleural effusion, atelectasis (partial or complete collapse of lung)
Crackles or rales lead to what kind of clinical conditions?
infection
inflammation

Friction rubs lead to what kind of clinical conditions?
Pleuritis, Pneumonia
