Respiratory Drugs Flashcards
This inhalers are for emergency or rescue treatment that need fast acting effect
Short Acting Inhalers
Common Drug for treating URT Infection or Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, There are 4 type which are:
Antihistamines
Nasal decongestants
Antitussives
Expectorants
3 types of Bronchodilators
- Beta Adrenergic Agonists
- Anticholinergics
- Xanthine Derivative
This is a condition in which the air spaces enlarge as a result of the destruction of the alveolar walls
Emphysema
This drug aids in the expectoration of excessive mucus that has accumulated in the respiratory tract by breaking down and thinning out the secretions
Expectorants
This Histamine receptor mediate smooth muscle contraction and dilation of capillaries, contraction of smooth muscle, stimulation of gastric secretions and acceleration of heart rate
H1 Receptors
This suppresses cough reflex , rarely used alone that is one of the drug cattegory of Antitussives
Opioid Drug
This decrease inflammatory response to the invading MOs
Nasal Steroids
Release of excessive histamine leads to anaphylaxis and severe allergic symptoms which may lead to:
- Constriction of smooth muscle
- Increase in body secretions
- Vasodilation and increased capillary permeability
What parts of the respiratory system is in the LRT or Lower Respiratory Tract
Trachea, Lungs and Bronchial Tree
This is due to excessive nasal secretions and inflamed and swollen nasal mucosa
Decongestants
The main diseases that is located or impair the LRT
Asthma, Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis
One common effects of inflammatory response from viruses
Mucus Production
In antitussives there are 2 categories of drugs which are:
Opioid and Non-Opioid
Common Colds are often resulting from a viral infection, example of virus that causes common cold is?
Rhinovirus or Influenza
