During an endotracheal and tracheostomy suctioning , how can you minimize a pt’s risk of developing hypoxia?

A
  • If pt is connected to a ventilator, give 100% O2 to the pt for 2 mins prior to suctioning
  • If not pt is not connected to a ventilator, attach Ambu bag to trach tube and give 3-5 breaths
  • Do not apply suction while inserting the catheter
  • Suctioning for no more than 10-15 secs at a time
  • Wait 30 secs between passes
