In relation to medication vials, what is coring?

A

Event that occurs when a needle pierces a medication vial stopper, causing small rubber particles to be lodged in the needle and syringe. These particles can then be injected into a patient along with the medication.

How can you prevent/minimize needle coring when drawing up from a med vial?

A
  • Insert the needle at a 45–60° angle, with the needle tip facing up. As the needle enters the vial, gradually increase the angle until it’s at 90° when the bevel passes through the stopper
  • Pierce within the target ring
