Medication Administration (Except for IV) Flashcards
In relation to medication vials, what is coring?
Event that occurs when a needle pierces a medication vial stopper, causing small rubber particles to be lodged in the needle and syringe. These particles can then be injected into a patient along with the medication.
How can you prevent/minimize needle coring when drawing up from a med vial?
- Insert the needle at a 45–60° angle, with the needle tip facing up. As the needle enters the vial, gradually increase the angle until it’s at 90° when the bevel passes through the stopper
- Pierce within the target ring
What characteristic allows some med vials to be multi-use vs their single-use counterparts?
All multiple-dose vials vials contain bacteriostatic preservatives that reduce the risk of microorganism growth while single-dose vials do not
When opening a multiple-dose vial for the 1st first time what you write on the vial label?
- Date (opened)
- Time (opened)
- Your initials
