Respiratory Flashcards
What is the structure of pleura?
Pleural membrane covers both inside of chest wall and outside of the lung on each side of chest. Pleural cavity contains small amount of watery fluid serous. Can be inflamed in pleurisy
Describe process known as internal respiration?
The process of gas exchange between the systemic capillaries and tissue fluid
Accessory function of respiratory system?
Losing body heat, humidification of air, filtering materials from inspired air ( transport of gases is NOT )
To which circulation do the capillaries involved in gas exchange in the lung belong?
Pulmonary
Which component of blood is most efficient at carrying oxygen
Red blood cells
Component of lower part of respiratory tract
Lungs, trachea, bronchi ( not pharynx)
Gas exchange in the body always involves
Diffusion across cells
Which process causes the movement of gases between air and blood?
Diffusion
What is the approximate total area of the surface available for gas exchange considering both lungs?
50-100 square metres
What are the smallest and most numerous of the components of the airway?
Alveoli
