Gram positive streptococcus usually found in pairs (diplococci)
Alpha haemolytic in aerobic conditions and beta haemolytic under anaerobic conditions

Atypicals (mycoplasma, chlamydophila, chlamydia pistaacci)

How do you diagnose leigonella?
Urinary antigen
How do you treat legionella?
Clarithromycin
Levofloxacin
What kind of bacteria is legionella?
Gram negative bacteria. Resides with water amoeba
How does legionella spread?
Inhalation of contaminated water droplets - no person to person spread
How is mycoplasma pneumonia treated? Why?
Macrolides - it needs to be treated by something that doesn’t act on the cell wall (mycoplasma does not have a cell wall)
What is the treatment for mild/moderate community acquired pneumonia?
Amoxicillin (5 days)
Doxyclcyline is allergic
What is the treatment for severe community acquired pneumonia?
Co Amoxiclav IV + Doxycycline oral
