Respiratory Flashcards
4 Events of the Respiratory System
Pulmonary Ventilation
External Respiration
Respiratory Gas Transport
Internal Respiration
movement of air in & out of the lungs; breathing
Pulmonary Ventilation
gas exchange between blood & alveoli happens
External Respiration
blood (hemoglobin) transports oxygen to arteries
Respiratory Gas Transport
cells utilize the oxygen
Internal Respiration
amount of air you can breathe in & breathe out; 500 ml
Tidal Volume
amount of air you can breathe in after normal breathing; 3100 ml
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
amount of air you can breathe out after normal breathing; 1200 ml
Expiratory Reserve Volume
the amount of air that stays in the lungs after you have ERV; 1200 ml
Residual Volume
TV + IRV + ERV = 4800 ml (for male) & 3100 ml (for female)
Vital Capacity
amount of air that remains in the conducting zones; 150 ml
Dead Space Volume
What are the respiratory volumes
1.) Tidal Volume
2.) Inspiratory Reserve Volume
3.) Expiratory Reserve Volume
4.) Residual Volume
5.) Vital Capacity
6.) Dead Space Volume
Flow of Breathing
