Flow of the Food
Mouth → Pharynx → Esophagus → Stomach → Small Intestine → Large Intestine → Anus
near the heart and surrounds the cardio-esophageal sphincter, through which food enters the stomach from the esophagus.
Cardial region
the expanded part of the stomach lateral to the cardial region.
Fundus
the midportion of the stomach.
Body
the terminal part of the stomach. It is continuous with the small intestine through the pyloric sphincter, or pyloric valve
Pylorus
the first section and is the shortest part of the small intestine. It is where most chemical digestion using enzymes take place as well as a small amount of nutrient absorption.
Duodenum
the mid-section of the small intestine
Jejunum
the final section of the small intestine. The ileum joins the large intestine at the ileocecal valve
Ileum
saclike and the first part of the large intestine
Cecum
hangs from the cecum and a potential trouble spot. Because it is usually twisted, it is an ideal location for bacteria to accumulate and multiply
Appendix
travels up the right side of the abdominal cavity and makes a turn, the right colic (or hepatic) flexure
Ascending colon
travels across the abdominal cavity and turns left at the left colic (or splenic) flexure
Transverse colon
travels down the left side
Descending colon
s-shaped region; enters the pelvis
Sigmoid colon
