Respirator Selection (Module 2) Flashcards
What is the purpose of respiratory protection?
To protect against risk associated with exposure via the
inhalation route (aerosols, vapors, gases, chemicals, oxygen deficient atmospheres, biological agents,)
Who pays for PPE?
Employer provides PPE & makes sure it appropriate for the hazard, maintained, & sanitary.
What is a respiratory protection program?
A written respiratory protection program must be established when respiratory
protection is needed
What does a respiratory protection program include?
- A procedure for selecting respirators
- Medical evaluation of employees required to wear respirators
- Fit testing procedure to ensure respirators fit the wearer properly
- Instructions for cleaning and sanitation of respirators
- Training of employees
- Clear communication of the interval for replacing respirator cartridges
What do employees have to learn in mandatory PPE training?
- When PPE is necessary
- What PPE is necessary
- How to properly don (put on), doff (remove), adjust, and wear PPE
- The proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the PPE
What is an air purifying respirator?
- Remove gas; vapor; particulate; or combinations of gas, vapor, and/or particulate; or combinations of gas, vapor, &/or particulate from the air through the use of filters, cartridges, or canisters
- Not for extremely toxic gaseous materials
- Not for exposures to g/v that cannot be clearly detected by odor
- Not for oxygen-deficient environments
What is an atmosphere-supplying respirator?
- work by providing clean breathing air from an uncontaminated source
- consist of a hood, a helmet, a tight fitting facepiece, or a loose-fitting facepiece
- the breathing air is supplied by a compressor or a pressurized cylinder
- must provide 4 cfm to a tight fitting facepiece; 6 cfm to loose fitting facepiece
How does a respirator work?
- This type of respirator filters the air by collecting a specific air contaminant - vapors,
dust, acid gas, and fumes - and removing it - can’t use in oxygen-deficient environment
How does an air-supplied respirator work?
- An air-supplied respirator contains a cylinder with breathable air.
What is an SCBA? (air-supplied respirator)
- Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
- firefighters use with unknown atmosphere
What is SCUBA? (Air-supplied respirator)
- Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
What are IDLHs?
- an immediately dangerous to life or health condition as a situation
- The IDLH limit represents the concentration of a chemical in the air to which healthy adult workers could be exposed (if their respirators fail) without suffering permanent or escape-impairing health effects
- all atmospheres with less than 19.5% oxygen
What respirator would you use in an IDLH atmosphere?
- Full facepiece pressure demand self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) certified by NIOSH for a minimum service life of thirty min
- combination full facepiece pressure demand supplied-air respirator (SAR)
with auxiliary self-contained air supp
What is a dust mask?
Filtering facepiece respirator
What is a tight-fitting respirator?
Have either a half mask or a full facepiece
What is a powered air-purifying respirator? (PAPRs)
- Have a hood, a helmet, a tight-fitting facepiece, or a loose-fitting facepiece
- Have a battery-powered blower to supply purified air
What is a filter medium?
- intercept the contaminant of interest with the desired basic efficiency
What is the protection factor equation? (PF)
PF= C(out)/C(in)
N95?
- filters 95% of the airborne particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
- Not resistant to oil
N99?
- filters 99% of the airborne particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
- Not resistant to oil
N100?
- filters 99.97% of the airborne particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
- Not resistant to oil
R95?
- filters 95% of the airborne particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
- somewhat resistant to oil
P95?
- filters 95% of the airborne particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
- strongly resistant to oil
P100?
- filters 99.97% of the airborne particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
- strongly resistant to oil
What are examples of atmosphere supplying respirators?
- Supplied-air respirators (SARs)
- Self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs)
- Combination respirators
What is a Supplied-air respirators (SARs)?
Provide breathing air through an airline from a source outside the contaminated work area
What is a Self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs)?
Allow the user to carry a pressurized (compressed) breathing air cylinder
What is a combination respirator?
- SARs that have an auxiliary SCBA that is used to escape from a hazardous environment
What is an assigned protection factor?
The workplace level of respiratory protection that a respirator or class of respirators is expected to provide to employees when the employer implements a continuing, effective respiratory protection prog
What is the maximum use concentration?
The MUC refers to the product of the PF multiplied by the occupational exposure limit (OEL), such as permissible exposure limit (PEL) or threshold
limit value (TLV), for a given chemical agent
MUC= PF x OEL
What factors are respirators selected based on?
- The nature of the hazard
- Prior knowledge about employee exposure
- Assigned protection factors (APF-values) along with awareness of limitations
- maximum use concentrations
- Availability of NIOSH certification
