Respiration And Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is respiration
• Respiration is the process in which energy is released from the molecules of food which you eat
Where does respiration occur
In the mitochondria
Aerobic respiration
Involves oxygen and is more efficient as the food is broken down to release energy
What is the equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
Anaerobic respiration
Does not involve oxygen and releases less energy than aerobic respiration
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose—> lactic acid (+ energy)
What is an oxygen debt
When the lactic acid builds up because there is not enough oxygen present in the blood supply to break it down
What is fermentation
A type of anaerobic respiration which occurs in yeast and instead of producing lactic acid Yeats produces ethanol which is a type of alchohol
What is the word equation for fermentation
Glucose —> ethanol+carbon dioxide (+ energy )
What is a mineral deficiency
When a plant doesn’t have enough minerals for a healthy growth
How do nitrates phosphates potassium and magnesium help with the plant
nitrates - healthy growth
phosphates - healthy roots
potassium - healthy leaves and flowers
magnesium - making chlorophyll
What is photosynthesis
A process that produces glucose using sunlight
Where in a plant does photosynthesis occur
In the chloroplasts
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
Water + carbon dioxide + sunlight —> glucose + oxygen
What is a producer
Any organism that can use photosynthesis to produce its own food , these are not just limited to plants but can include other organisms such as algae
What can the rate of photosynthesis be affected by
Light intensity
Carbon dioxide concentration
Temperature
What adaptations do leaves have for photosynthesis
They are thin to allow the most light through
• There is a lot of chlorophyll to absorb light
• They have a large surface area to absorb as much light as possible
What 4 things are needed for photosynthesis
Sunlight
Chlorophyll
Water
Carbon dioxide
What is the stomata
The leaf is covered in holes allowing carbon dioxide to diffuse into the leaf
What make chloroplasts green
Chlorophyll
Where does most energy in the earth come from
The sun
What is the difference between respiration and breathing?
The difference between breathing and respiration is that breathing is the process of taking in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide while respiration is the process where the body breaks down the oxygen so that the cells in the body can use it to create energy.
What is the chemical formula for glucose
C6H12O6
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —>C6H12O6+ 6O2
carbon water glucose oxygen
dioxide
