Breathing Flashcards
How does the diaphragm move in relation to your lungs
It moves up when it relaxes and down
when it contracts.
What is diffusion
when particles move from a high concentration area to a low one
Where does gas exchange take place
Alveoli
How are the lungs well adapted for gas exchange
They are moist
have a good blood supply
The alveoli (air sacs ) give the lungs a big internal surface area
How does the diaphragm help with breathing?
Increases the space in your chest cavity( the space inside your chest ) so the lungs can expand into it
What machine is used to measure lung volume
Spirometer
What happens to the volume of the chest cavity when the diaphragm moves down ?
Increases the volume and decreases the pressure
What happens during an asthma attack
The muscles around their bronchioles contract. This narrows the airways.
The lining of the airways becomes inflamed and fluid builds up in the airways.
This narrows the airways further and makes it hard to breathe (an asthma attack).
What are the symptoms of an asthma attack
Difficulty breathing
Wheezing
A tight chest
When symptoms appear, sufferers can use an inhaler containing drugs that open up the airways.
What 4 main things are in cigarette smoke
Carbon monoxide
Nicotine
Tar
And particulates
What is a smokers cough
When tar covers the cilia hairs meaning you can’t get rid of mucus it builds up and causes you to cough more
What does tar contain that could give you cancer
Carcinogens and it can cause cancer of the lung throat and mouth
What does having a healthy body mean
A body that works properly
A healthy mental state where you can cope with ups and downs of life
What are the different types of drugs
Medical
recreational (for enjoyment)
What are solvents
Things like paints and aerosols and they are drugs because they cause hallucinations if inhaled
