Forces Flashcards
What does friction do
Friction is a force that will slow down a moving objects due to 2 surfaces rubbing on one another
What is the drag force
When an object is moving through a fluid the force which slows it down is called drag
In which direction does friction act
Friction always acts in the opposite way to movemet
What is the equation for solving moments
Moment (Nm) = force (N) x distance (M)
What will happen when the moments are not equal
The objects will turn to the side with the bigger moment
What is pressure
How much force is put on a certain area
How do you calculate pressure
Pressure (N/m2) = force (N) divided by area (m2)
What excerts the smallest pressure something with a large are or a smaller surface area
The one with the larger area because as it has a larger area the pressure is lower because it spreads out your weight
When you go up a mountain is there more or less atmospheric pressure
Less because the higher you go the less the atmospheric there is above you
What does upthrust do
Water causes upthrust which makes things float
What is the centre of gravity
The point in an object where all the force of gravity seems to act
Define deformation
The changing of shape due to a force
Define elastic limit
The point beyond which a spring will not return to its natural length when the force is removed
Define equilibrium
State of an object when the opposing forces are balanced
Define extension
The difference between the original length of an object and the length when you apply force
