Q

What is the route of breathing?

A

When we breathe in, air enters through our nose and mouth. It then goes down the trachea. The trachea splits into two tubes called the bronchi. These then divide further into bronchioles. Eventually it ends up in the microscopic air sacs called the alveoli.

Name the 9 parts of the respiratory system:

A

Q

What happens when we inhale?

A

The diaphragm contracts, moving down and in, the intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribs up and out, these both make the thorax volume increase, and the pressure in the lungs decreases also

Q

What happens in exhalation?

A

The ribs move down and in, the diaphragm moves up to become dome shaped, this makes the chest smaller in volume and increases the pressure in the lungs so air is forced out.

Q

How does the contraction of the diaphragm change the volume and pressure of the thorax capacity?

A

Upon inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens and the chest cavity enlarges. This contraction creates a vacuum, which pulls air into the lungs. Upon exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and returns to its domelike shape, and air is forced out of the lungs.

Q

What is gas exchange?

A

During gas exchange oxygen moves from the lungs to the bloodstream. At the same time carbon dioxide passes from the blood to the lungs. This happens in the lungs between the alveoli and a network of tiny blood vessels called capillaries, which are located in the walls of the alveoli.

Q

What is anaerobic respiration?

A

Anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen and releases less energy but more quickly than aerobic respiration.

17
Q

When you inhale, how much oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen is in the air that you inhaled?

A

Oxygen- 21%
Carbon dioxide- 0.04%
Nitrogen- 79%

18
Q

When you exhale, how much oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen is in the air you exhale?

A

Oxygen- 16%
Carbon dioxide- 4%
Nitrogen- 79%

19
Q

In the bell jar model, what are the limitations?

A

The jar cannot move, so it doesn’t increase any volume. Also, there would usually be liquid in there which there isn’t so it would happen differently in the real respiratory system
