Blood, Heart And Exercise Flashcards
What are the 5 components of blood?
Blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma
What does plasma contain?
Plasma contains dissolved substances such as water, salt, enzymes and antibodies, clotting factors and proteins.
What adaptations do red blood cells have to carry oxygen?
They have a bi-concave shape which increases their surface area to absorb oxygen, and they carry a substance called haemoglobin to stick to oxygen molecules
Function of white blood cells:
They help the body fight infection and other diseases
Function of platelets:
They stop and prevent bleeding. They clump together to form a clot that stops the bleeding
Why does your heart rate increase during exercise?
During exercise, your body may need three or four times your normal cardiac output, because your muscles need more oxygen when you exert yourself. During exercise, your heart typically beats faster so that more blood gets out to your body.
