Respiration & Air Pollution Flashcards
Respiration
The process by which energy is released from food by all living cells
Breathing
Refers to the movements that cause air to be moved into and out of the lungs, which form part of the respiratory system
Gaseous exchange
The process by which oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood through a respiratory system
Aerobic Respiration
The process by which energy is released from food by all living cells using oxygen
Anaerobic respiration
The process by which energy is released from food by living cells without the use of oxygen
Pollution
The contamination of the natural environment by the release of unpleasant and harmful substances into the environment
Effects of smoking
Lung damage
Cancer of the mouth, throat, oesophagus or lungs
Importance of smoke-free environments
Protects individuals against exposure to secondhand smoke.
