Matter & Cells Flashcards
What is volume?
Volume is the amount of space an object occupies
What is mass?
Mass is the number of particles making up an object
What are the 3 states in matter?
1) Solid State
2) Liquid State
3) Gas State
What are the different types of particles that makes up the three common states?
Atoms, molecules, ions
Define the term ‘Evaporation’
The procsss by which a liquid changes to a vapour or gas at temperatures below its boiling point.
Melting Point
The temperature at which a solid changes to liquid.
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
Freezing point
The temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid.
Function of Cell Membrane
Controls what substances enter and leave the cell.
Function of Cytoplasm
Supports the organelles. The site of many chemical reactions.
Function of Nucleus
Controls the characteristics and functioning of the cell
Function of Mitochondrion
Where respiration occurs to release energy for the cell
Function of Ribosome
Where proteins are produced
Function of Vacuole
Stores food, cell secretions and cell waste. Supports the plant when turgid
Function of Cell Wall
Supports and protects the cell and gives it shape
