Respiration Flashcards
What 4 things are assessed in a complete respiration assessment?
Rate: number of breaths per minute
Rhythm: regularity of inspirations and expirations
Depth: volume of air exchanged with each breath
Character: effort and sound produced during breathing
What is the normal RRR for healthy newborns?
33-45 breaths/min
What is the normal RRR for healthy 1 year olds?
25-35 Breaths/min
What is the normal RRR for healthy 10 year olds?
15-20 breaths/min
What is the normal RRR for healthy adults?
12-20 breaths/min
What is a normal respiratory rhythm in healthy adults?
How does this change for COPD patients?
normal: inhale (I) is half as long as exhale (E) [I:E is 1:2]
COPD: I:E is longer ( 1:3 or 1:4)
What is an Apnea breathing pattern?
absence of spontaneous breathing
What is a Blot’s breathing pattern?
irregular breathing which varies in depth and rate with periods of apnea which is often associated with increased intracranial pressure or damage to medulla
What is a Bradypnea breathing pattern?
slower than normal respiratory rate which can be caused due to illness or high level of respiratory fitness
What is a Cheyne-Stokes (periodic) breathing pattern?
decreasing rate and depth of breathing with bout of apnea which can be due to CNS damage
What is an Eupnea breathing pattern?
normal rate and depth
What is a Hypernea breathing pattern?
increased rate and depth
What is a Hyponea breathing pattern?
decreased rate and depth
What is Kussmaul’s breathing pattern?
deep and fast breathing often associated with metabolic acidosis
What is a Paradoxical breathing pattern?
chest wall moves in with inhale and out with exhale due to chest trauma or paralysis of the diaphragm
