Respiration Flashcards
Is cellular respiration an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Exothermic
Where does cellular respiration happen?
Cellular respiration happens in all living cells
What is the reaction for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy transfer)
Why is respiration important?
The energy transferred by respiration gives energy for all living cells to function.
Effects of respiration on respiration and why?
Increase of breathing rate as more oxygen is needed, increase in heart rate as oxygen needs to be pumped faster around the body, increase in blood movement as more oxygen needs to be delivered to muscles.
Anaerobic respiration
Respiration without oxygen
Comparison between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration includes oxygen however anaerobic respiration does not. Aerobic respiration produces carbon dioxide and water from using glucose and oxygen however anaerobic respiration only uses glucose and produces lactic acid that build up in muscles.
Comparison of anaerobic respiration in animals, bacteria, and yeast.
In animals such as humans and bacteria cells anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid. In yeast cells produce ethanol and carbon dioxide.
What is Insulin?
Insulin is a hormone released when blood sugar levels are high
What is glucagon?
Glucagon is a hormone released when blood sugar levels are low
What does insulin do?
Insulin causes the cells take up more glucose, cells to respire more, and tells the liver to store some of the glucose.
What does glucagon do?
Glucagon causes the liver to turn it into glucose and it tells the liver to break down protein into amino acids.
Where is insulin made?
Pancreas
Where is glucagon made?
Pancreas
What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is where your pancreas does not produce enough insulin.
