What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system consists of glands all around your body that secrete chemicals (hormones) that control varying conditions in your body.
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemicals that are released from glands in the endocrine system.
What is insulin?
Insulin is a rapid response hormone that controls your blood glucose.
What is adrenaline?
Adrenaline is a rapid responde hormone that prepares your body for fight or flight. It does this by increasing heart rate and awareness.
What is follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)?
FSH is a hormone that stimulates the ovaries to make oestrogen.
What does the pituitary gland do?
- controls growth in children
- stimulates thyroid gland to make thyroxin to control bodies metabolism.
- stimulates ovareis to make oestrogen
- stimulates testes to make sperm and testosterone.
What does the thyroid gland do?
Controls the metabolic rate of the body.
What does the pancreas do?
The pancreas controls the levels of glucose in the blood.
What does the adrenal gland do?
The adrenal gland prepares the body for stressful situation by releasing adrenaline.
What do the ovaries do?
Controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the menstrual cycle.
What do the testes do?
The testes control the development of the male secondary sexual characteristics and are involved in the production of sperm.
