respiration? Flashcards
gas exchange
oxygen from lungs into blood, carbon dioxide out of blood into lungs
2nd stage of respiration
external respiration: exchange of oxygen and co2 between inspired air inside the lungs and the blood
total lung capacity (TLC)
total volume of air in lungs after inhaling max possible volume of air
- 6L avg
forced vital capacity (FVC)
volume of air you can exhale after inhaling max volume
residual volume
volume of air remaining that cannot be exhaled
tidal volume
volume of air that moves into and out of lungs with every normal breath
inspiratory reserve volume
additional volume of air you can inhale after normal breath
expiratory reserve volume
additional volume of air you can exhale after normal exhale
Haemoglobin
- transporting o2 from the lungs to respiring tissues
- transporting co2 from respiring tissues back to the lungs where it can be exhaled.
ventilation
flow of air in and out of the lungs in order for gas exchange to occur at the alveoli
muscles involved in ventilation
diaphragm
intercostal muscles (antagonistic)
abdominal muscles
