Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
Anaerobic respiration (yeast)
A
C6H12O6 ⟶ 2C2H5OH + 2CO2 + 2ATP.
Glucose ⟶ 2 ethanol + 2 carbon dioxide + 2 ATP
2
Q
Anaerobic respiration (lactic acid)
A
C6H12O6 ⟶ 2C3H6O3 + 2 ATP
Glucose ⟶ 2 Lactic Acid + 2 ATP
3
Q
Aerobic respiration
A
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ⟶ 6CO2 + 6H2O
4
Q
Oxygen Debt
A
- Oxygen required to oxidize lactic acid, created from anaerobic respiration.
- aka EPOC - Excessive Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption
5
Q
Lactic Acid Build Up
A
- Occurs in muscle cells during vigorous exercise
- Build up in tissues means the more acid produced, the more oxygen is required to react with it.
- Causes burning sensation in muscles.
6
Q
Aerobic (Cycle)
A
1) Glycolysis - Glucose broken down into 2 Pyruvic acid molecules - 2 ATP + 2NADH
2) Link Reaction - 2NADH
3) Kreb’s Cycle - If pyruvate get oxygen, it goes to the mitochondria to undergo kreb’s cycle - 2FADH, 2ATP, 6NADH
4) ETC - Electron Transport Chain
1 FADH = 2 ATP
1 NADH = 3 ATP
Total = 38 ATP
