Global Warming Flashcards
Global Warming
Gradual increase in atmospheric temperature caused by increase in greenhouse gases
Greenhouse gases
CO2, H2O, CH4 - required to trap heat
Key species/keystone species
these species being removed triggers cascade effect
Interdependency
Every living organism and its environment is affected by the presence/absence of biotic and abiotic components
Eutrophication
When algal bloom is very high due to excess fertilization
Biological oxygen demand
Algae dies and becomes feed for microorganisms - when mircoorganism population increases, the need for oxygen increases, oxygen level decreases
Microplastics
Plastic doesn’t degrade, it breaks down into small particles under the presence of the sun
Trophic transfer
When organisms that consume microplastics on one trophic level, predators that depend on them for food, consume them as well - affects organisms in all trophic levels
- aka bioaccumulation
Conservation
- strict policies
- not giving policies to logging companies (monitor licensed companies)
- selective felling - selective cutting of trees in particular areas and leaving more trees to grow in the same area
- Coppicing - trees are chopped one meter above ground level, letting the tree have a chance to regrow
Captive breeding
Breeding animals outside of their environments in restricted conditions in farms or other closed facilities
