Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
respiration releases energy from the glucose molecules for use by the body
What do organisms need energy for?
chemical reactions to build larger molecules
movement
to keep warm
What are the 2 types of respiration?
aerobic and anaerobic
Is aerobic with or without oxygen?
with oxygen
Is anaerobic with or without oxygen?
without oxygen
What is aerobic respiration?
glucose reacts with oxygen, this reaction transfers energy that your cells can use
What is anaerobic respiration?
a form of respiration that does not use oxygen and happens without oxygen and releases less energy but quickly
Is aerobic endothermic or exotherimic?
exothermic
Where does aerobic transfer energy to?
the environment
Formula for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
takes place in the mitochondria
Formula for anaerobic respiration in animals and humans?
glucose = lactic acid
Where is lactic acid produced?
in animals
Formula for anaerobic respiration in bacteria and fungi?
glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide
What does the body demand during excersise?
the body demands more energy so the rate of respiration needs to increase
