Phototsynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
an endothermic reaction in which energy is transferred to chloroplasts from the environment
Where does photosynthesis happen?
in the chloroplast , a green pigment called chlorophyll absorbs light energy
Equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
4 steps in photosynthesis
- energy is transferred from the environment to the chloroplast by light
- this energy is then transferred to convert carbon dioxide from the air + water from the soil into a simple sugar or glucose
- the chemical reaction also produces oxygen gas
- the oxygen is then released to the air to breathe
What does photo stand for?
light
What does synthesis stand for?
to make
How are leaf’s adapted?
most leaves are broad giving them a big surface area for light to fall on
contain chlorophyll to absorb light
have veins which bring in water
How is algae adapted?
- large surface area and absorb carbon dioxide dissolved in water around them
- the oxygen they produce also dissolved in the water around them as it’s released
What are the factors affecting photosynthesis?
Temperature
carbon dioxide concentration
light intensity
chlorophyll concentration
Temperature
as temp increases so does the rate of photosynthesises beacuse more energy is provided for the reaction
Carbon dioxide concentration
as the rate of co2 increases so does the rate of photosynthesis
Light intensity
as light increases so does the rate of photosynthesis
Chlorophyll concentration
leaves with more chlorophyll better absorb the light so rate of photosynthesis increases
Converting glucose
starch
fats
cellulose
proteins
