Treatment of the Common Cold
A
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Cough medicines, teas
- Vicks: vapour rubs, inhaler sticks, nasal spray
- Nasal saline drops/sprays
(cold and cough remedies shouldn’t be used on children undr 6 years) - Avoid use of oral sympathomimetics (e.g pseudoephedrine/phenylepherine) for high blood pressure

Difference between common cold and flu
A
- Flu is more common in winter months whereas common cold is any time of the year
- Flu symptoms happen in hours whereas cc is 1-2 daus
- Muscle pain, chills and malaise (weak + body discomfort) appetite loss
- GI issues e.g vomiting and diarrhoea is more common in children in flu
- Occular symptoms e.g photophobia more common in flu

Patient advice for common cold
A
- Gurgling saltwater = relives sore throat/nasal congestion
- Adequate rest because it is self-limiting
- Hot honey lemon water: thins mucus + soothens sore throat
- Drink fluids
- Steam inhalation to relieve congestion

Treatment for Flu/Influenza
A
- Drink adequate fluids to avoid dehydration
- Paracet or ibupro
- Adequate rest
- (antiviral drugs are prescription only, can start treatment within 48 hrs of symptoms)
- Decongestants ect

Patient advice for Flu
A
- Suggest flu shot
- Hygeine practice (hand sanitiser, washing hands ect)
- Advice from common cold to help relieve symptoms

Treatment for a cough
A
- Honey lemon water
- OTC: Benylin cough syrup (one for chesty, one for dry/tickly cough)

Difference between allergic conjunctivitis and rhinitis
A
- Allergic conjunctivitis includes inflammation of the conjunctiva, signs of oedematous swelling ect whereas rhinitis does not

Treatment for rhinitis
A
- Nasal spray to rinse nasal cavity
- Antihistamines: piriton or benadryl

Patient advice for rhinitis
A
- Avoidance of the allergen
- Choose wooden floor instead of carpet
- Use damp duster to dust off pollen or dust in the house
