Respiration Flashcards
Aerobic respiration happens when the person has what?
Enough Oxygen
Anaerobic respiration happens when the person has what?
Not enough oxygen and uses glucose instead
What is the waste product of anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid; an acid that makes your muscles ache and hurt
Why can’t animals live without plants?
Because plants produce oxygen and animals need oxygen to live, grow, reproduce and turn food into energy (glucose to respire)
What do humans breathe in and out
In oxygen and out co2
Why does the body need carbohydrates?
Glucose from digested carbohydrates is an important substance that contains stored chemical energy
What is cell respiration
When cells release energy from glucose
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen ->CO2 + water
What is the Trachea?
Wind pipe which has rings of cartilage to keep the wind pipe open
What are the bronchus?
They are the two pipes the leads from the trachea into both lungs
What are the bronchioles?
They are more branches coming off the bronchus
What are the air sacks at the end of the bronchioles called and what do they look like?
Alveoli and they look like broccoli
As they have such a large surface area, they can perform more gas exchange. They are quite thin so the distance the gas needs to travel is short.
What is the diaphragm ?
It is the layer of muscle under the lungs which contracts when you breathe in and relaxes when you breathe out
What do the ribs do?
They cover and protect your respiratory system.
What are the pros of smoking?
It’s a stimulant which makes you feel good
What are the cons of smoking?
Addictive so therefor becomes expensive
The smoke is an irritant which can trigger asthma
It contains tar which coats the insides of your lungs and causes lung cancer
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> CO2 + lactic acid
Give some examples of diseases of the respiratory system
Asthma
Pleurisy
Tuberculosis
Lung cancer
Emphysema which makes getting enough oxygen into the blood very difficult
When you breathe in does the lung inflate or deflate?
Inflates
Name the 3 chemicals in cigarettes and give a description for each one
Tar - can trigger asthma and make airways close up so less O2 gets to the lungs
Carbon monoxide - Causes cancer. Coats the inside of the lungs making it harder for O2 to diffuse across the alveoli. Also breaks down alveoli wall reducing surface area for gas exchange.
Nicotine - combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells so less O2 can be carried around the body
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
(Balancing equations)
