Q

Why can’t animals live without plants?

A

Because plants produce oxygen and animals need oxygen to live, grow, reproduce and turn food into energy (glucose to respire)

12
Q

What are the air sacks at the end of the bronchioles called and what do they look like?

A

Alveoli and they look like broccoli
As they have such a large surface area, they can perform more gas exchange. They are quite thin so the distance the gas needs to travel is short.

16
Q

What are the cons of smoking?

A

Addictive so therefor becomes expensive
The smoke is an irritant which can trigger asthma
It contains tar which coats the insides of your lungs and causes lung cancer

17
Q

What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?

A

Glucose -> CO2 + lactic acid

18
Q

Give some examples of diseases of the respiratory system

A

Asthma
Pleurisy
Tuberculosis
Lung cancer
Emphysema which makes getting enough oxygen into the blood very difficult

19
Q

When you breathe in does the lung inflate or deflate?

A

Inflates

20
Q

Name the 3 chemicals in cigarettes and give a description for each one

A

Tar - can trigger asthma and make airways close up so less O2 gets to the lungs
Carbon monoxide - Causes cancer. Coats the inside of the lungs making it harder for O2 to diffuse across the alveoli. Also breaks down alveoli wall reducing surface area for gas exchange.
Nicotine - combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells so less O2 can be carried around the body

21
Q

What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration

A

C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
(Balancing equations)
