Respiration Flashcards
General equation for respiration is…?
enzymes
Glucose + Oxygen ————–> ATP + Carbon dioxide + Water
- C(6)H(12)O(2) + O(2) ——> ATP + CO(2) + H(2)O -
What is the main job of respiration?
As glucose cannot be used directly, it is change into a chemical that cells can get energy from called ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE (ATP).
(3 phosphates)(tri)
Adenosine——-P——-P-/-/-P
^——High energy bond.
Diagram of ATP
Adenosine——-P——-P (ENERGY!) —–> P
As energy is used in our cells, energy is released, the high energy bond is broken and end up with ADP (ADENOSINE DIPHOSPHATE)
What are some examples of energy consuming reactions?
Muscular contractions
Cell division
Protein synthesis
How does Glycosis occur?
It occurs in the cytoplasm and does not require oxygen

What happens next is dependent on the availability of oxygen to the cell…
…Plenty of Oxygen…Aerobic respiration.
…Little/no Oxygen…Fermentation
