respiration Flashcards
trachea
tube that connects the nose and mouth to the lungs
bronchi
the trachea divides into two larger tubes called the bronchi (plural)/bronchus (singular)
bronchiole
a large network of tubes that bronchi divide into - like the branches of a tree
alveoli
many tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place
ribs
a skeletal structure made from bone which protects the vital organs
intercostal muscles
small muscles between the ribs that allow the rib cage to move up and down
diaphragm
a sheet of muscle which contract which give the lungs space to expand and take air in
what is an adaptation benefit of alveoli having a large blood suply
Means that there is a constant diffusion gradient that lets oxygen get absorbed in to the blood
what is an adaptation benefit of alveoli having a large surface
A larger surface area means that diffusion of gases happens faster
what is an adaptation benefit of alveoli being one cell thick
A shorter distance for the gases to diffuse means that diffusion happens faster
what is an adaptation benefit of moist surface of alveoli
Allows gases to dissolve before diffusion
difusion
Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Diffusion happens in liquids and gases because their particles move randomly from place to place. Diffusion is an important process for living things; it is how substances move in and out of cells.
