Respiration Flashcards
Glycolysis
glucose is broken down into pyruvate. Net production: 2 ATP, 2 reduced NAD
Link reaction
pyruvate is converted into Acetyl CoA. Net production: 2 reduced NAD, 2 CO2
krebs cycle
Acetyl CoA is introduced into a cycle by binding with a 4C carbon to make a 6C carbon. This cycle results in the net production of 1 ATP, 6 reduced NAD, 2 reduced FAD, 4 CO2
Oxidative phosphorylation
the reduced NAD and reduced FAD are oxidised to give H+ ions and electrons to allow the H+ ions to be pumped into the Intermembrane space. The H+ ions diffuse out of the imtermembrane space back into the matrix through ATP synthase (chemiosmosis)
Matrix
area within the inner membrane of a mitochondria
Lactate fermentation
Occurs in mammals. pyruvate is turned into lactate. 1 reduced NAD is oxidised to NAD
Alcoholic fermentation
Occurs in yeast cells. pyruvate turned into ethanal (1 CO2 produced). Ethanal turns into ethanol (1 reduced NAD oxidised to NAD)
